Trademark Use
A University trademark is defined as any mark, logo, symbol, nickname, letter(s), word(s), design, phrase or derivative that can be associated with the University of Pittsburgh and can be distinguished from those of other institutions or entities. Examples of University of Pittsburgh identity marks include: "University of Pittsburgh," "Pittsburgh Panthers," "Panthers," "Pitt," "Pitt Bradford," "Pitt Greensburg," "Pitt Johnstown," "Pitt Titusville," "U of P," "UP," "UPB," "UPG," "UPJ," "UPT," and others containing graphic components in addition to the words, such as the University seal, a representation of a football helmet, a representation of a campus mascot, the Alma Mater, Hail to Pitt and Pitt Victory songs, representations of campus scenes, buildings, statuary, or landmarks. The University of Pittsburgh's trademark policy establishes the institution's right to control the use of the University name, logos, trademarks, and service marks; the nature and quality of goods or services with which they are associated; and, in order to achieve uniformity of presentation of the marks, the artistic form in which the marks are reproduced. A license is required to use University identity marks for commercial purpose. To request an application, visit www.clc.com. Only the Director of Licensing & Merchandising in the office of Trademark Licensing is authorized to grant a license to use University identity marks. No one may request or authorize a manufacturer to apply University of Pittsburgh identity marks on products, unless the manufacturer is officially licensed by the University of Pittsburgh and artwork has been reviewed and approved in writing by the Office of Trademark Licensing.
Non-commercial use is any attempt to utilize University identity marks without collection of profit or financial gain. Examples of non-commercial use include, but are not limited to:
Permission is required for any individual, department, organization, or company wishing to use University of Pittsburgh identity marks in a non-commercial manner. Only the Office of Trademark Licensing is authorized to approve use of University identity marks on product for internal consumption, giveaway, and promotion. No one may request or authorize a manufacturer to apply University of Pittsburgh identity marks on products, unless the manufacturer is officially licensed by the University of Pittsburgh and artwork has been reviewed and approved in writing by the Office of Trademark Licensing. University identity marks are not to be used in any way that will discriminate against any persons or groups based on age, ancestry, belief, color, creed, disability, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any way that would be a violation of the University's anti-discrimination policies. The University prohibits the use of any of its identity marks in any form in connection with partisan political activity of any kind, and the endorsement, support, or promotion of political candidates or legislative initiatives. University buildings, statuary, or landmarks may not be used in any commercial advertisement in such a way as to misrepresent the University's involvement with, or support, promotion or endorsement of any product or service. The University of Pittsburgh and University-affiliated organizations that accept commercial advertising for their publications and programs will screen all advertisers for compliance with the University's licensing program. Advertising from unlicensed manufacturers of trademarked products or advertisements using the University of Pittsburgh's identity marks without approval will not be accepted for publication. University identity marks should not be incorporated into off-campus business telephone numbers, internet addresses, or internet domain names. No one may use, or authorize licensed manufacturers to use, University of Pittsburgh identity marks in a form that differs from the sanctioned identity marks. Any member of the University Community who becomes aware of the unauthorized use of University identity marks is responsible for notifying the Director of Licensing and Merchandising. Unauthorized use of University identity marks may infringe upon the University's trademarks rights, punishable by law.
