COLLEGE PARK, Md.--Pitt softball held scoreless in the first game of its doubleheader against No. 23 Maryland, 6-0, at Robert Taylor Stadium. The Panthers slipped to 9-8 in the loss, while the Terps improved to 19-1.

Pitt was held to just three hits in the game, and left six runners stranded on base.

In the fourth inning, junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) and senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied back-to-back singles and moved to third and second, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt from senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville). However, the Panthers were unable to send them home as they tallied back-to-back pop ups.

Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) fell to 6-4 with the loss, as she allowed six runs of seven hits. She struck out five batters and walked another two.

In the first inning, Maryland scored its winning run with a stolen base at second was followed by a steal at home.

The Terps then added four more runs off three hits and a Pitt error in the second inning. Their final run of the game was in the sixth, as a single to third led to a score.

Freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) stole two bases in the game, while freshman Alicia Broudy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Card notched a steal.
