Softball Falls To Canisius In Eight
March 15, 2008
HARRISONBURG, Va.--A four inning scoring drought sent the game into an extra inning, where the Pitt softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Canisius in its third game of the James Madison Tournament, at the JMU Complex. The Panthers evened their record at 10-10, while the Griffs improved to 5-2. With the score tied 1-1 headed into the bottom of the eighth inning, Pitt allowed just one hit in the inning. However, that one hit was a single to center field with bases loaded and giving Canisius the 2-1 victory. Pitt struck first in the opening inning, as freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) led off with a single that trickled through the middle. She then moved to third on a passed ball and stole third before scoring on a throw. Tutt was 2-for-4 with a run and a steal in the game. Canisius recorded their first run in the third inning off two hits. The Panthers had a chance to go ahead in the seventh, as two runners were in scoring position off a hit and a Griff error. Unfortunately, Pitt stranded both. The Panthers left eight on base in the game. Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) threw the loss for Pitt, giving up six hits in 7.1 innings of action. She also struck out five. The Panthers meet host James Madision this afternoon.
